Oh my God, please tell me you did not seriously just respond with a dictionary definition. Because that dictionary totally doesn’t reflect centuries of imperialism and racism or anything.
Here’s a fun fact- the idea of our society as “civilized” and those of others, mostly those funny brown people, as “uncivilized” and having a lower level of culture, is ridiculously rooted in imperialist and racist bullshit. You can quote all the dictionary definitions you want, but all a dictionary does is reflect word usage, and the word usage of that particular word? Impossible to separate from racism.

Jeeeeeeeez. I started reading Cracked before I became aware of a lot of social issues, and I used to read it for hours and hours. I’ve been spending less time on there now because as I read more I realized how awwwwwwwwwwful some of their writing is and I didn’t even want to have my fun 13yo image of them ruined in my head.
But man this is it. This is where I finally have to admit it. CRACKED. PLEASE. I HAVE LOST SO MUCH RESPECT FOR YOU.

Yeah, same. Like, I still check there now and again- well, debating whether I will in the future, IDK if this is representative of Cracked as a whole or just one asshole who’s on their Tumblr atm- but some of their articles, fuck. Like that one where they referred to a trans woman as “he” the whole time? Or their ridiculous use of the r-word? And I’m not even going to touch on all the other ableist bullshit. Yeah, my image of them has certainly tarnished over the years.

I’m kind of hoping some of the people on my dash who are better at dealing with this type of bullshit will chime in, though Cthulhu knows they already have more than enough shit to deal with, I certainly won’t blame them if they don’t.
Exactly, same thing with me. I’ll occasionally check them out (like for example, I think I did the same thing you did, after seeing that other post calling out Cracked for blocking that person in their forum, I went through a couple of their articles then and also saw the isolated tribes who didn’t know about civilization, about which I considered making a post because something just felt so wrong about that, so yes I am very happy you did because like I said, you were definitely more articulate haha :D) - but as I become more and more aware, I keep seeing more and more things wrong in their articles, and it doesn’t seem to be changing. Forever catering to the able white heterosexual cismale, I suppose.
Haha, you’re welcome. I’m not quite confident in my awareness or education or anything to call out things in too much detail (like I couldn’t write an essay on it, but yeah I definitely try to speak up when I see something wrong) so I really appreciate and admire people that have the confidence to do so.
