Helena is testing out how it is to be The Bat. And discovers that she doesn’t always put fear into people just because she has the batsymbol on her chest. It being NML and she being the Bat means she can do anything, right? Nope. It doesn’t. Especially since she’s wearing the batsymbol.

Helena Bertinelli changed my life. She can be brash and she carries a lot of rage (like me). She pushes people away easily, but when she loves, she loves with a full force (like me). Helena taught me I should never be ashamed or apologize for who I am. When I read her stories, I feel like I’m watching myself in comic book form. When I see her working out her own anger and breaking down her walls, I feel inspired to do the same.

Helena’s ever changing eye colors. Apparently, Hels’ eyes were challenging the Lantern Corps for the title of “most chromatic variance” in the DC Universe.

Either that, or she just needs to pick the right contact lenses, and stick with them. The ever changing eye colors seem to be a reflection of DC’s attitude towards Helena in general, as at times, they did seem to have trouble figuring out what to do with her and how to portray her, and it led to several inconsistencies in the way she was portrayed, ranging from people forgetting her growth as a person and how she moved away from her crazy black and white kill! tendencies (looking at you Chris Yost and Tony Daniels) to people forgetting that she’s a billionaire heiress and having her sell out Batman for a new bike and uniform (Jeph Loeb).

Though to go back to her eye color for a second, if it were up to me, I’d make her eyes brown instead of blue. I’d do so, if only because it would distinguish her from the rest of the DCU, who all seem to be cut from the same cloth that stipulates they must have dark features and blue eyes.

And on a hilarious note, three of these pics are from the same comic, as her eyes once changed colors three times in one issue (Detective Comics 863).

That annoys me so much when it happens.  DC comics usually have someone whose only job is to be the colorist and yet they will mess up on hair, eye, and even skin colors in one issue or sometimes even on the same page.  The old newspaper style printing was complicated and one can understand why it was out of their hands when it misprinted.  But now, in the digital age, when recoloring is so very easy?  No excuse.

The amount of black-haired blue-eyed people is also ridiculous… hazel or brown would be nice for a change

Hello :) Because I was curious and love fusions/crossovers: what god tier classes and aspects would you give to each of the batfam members?

Hey you!

I totally forgot this question, or I would’ve been on top of it waaaay earlier. But thank you SO much for asking! Here we go:

Bruce: Knight of Void (“The role of the void player is to somehow em8race nothingness, to 8ecome one with it. And yet in total contradiction with this, to make use of the power it grants and serve a role of relevance, one must find a way to overcome it! To see the limitless potential in the void, and 8ring it into 8eing” come on PERFECT FOR HIM)
Dick: Heir of Heart
Jay: Mage of Life (tempted to go with Mage of Doom - just like Sollux)
Tim: Page of Mind (come on, perfect for him. Pages have limited powers at first but HUGE powers later on, and Mind is the opposite of Heart - logical, cold, deductive)
Babs: Knight of Space (ok just think about that one for a second perfect PERFECT); alternatively, Knight of Light
Cass: Sylph of Time (same as me!!!)
Steph: Witch of Hope (just like Alex’s and my troll Reeliu! although Reeliu is actually based on a real person so)
Damian: Prince of Blood (ok just let that one sink in for a while)

EXTENDED BATFAM

Talia: Witch of Blood, for defs
Kate: Mage of Rage sounds way too silly…Maid of Rage?
Helena (Bertinelli): tempted to go with Knight of Time actually, just like Dave
Renee (shhhh she’s included): Seer of Life (after 52 especially? oh yes)
David Zavimbe: Knight of Light (Batwing4lyfe)
Bilal Asselah (Bilal I miss you sob): Sylph of Life (lots of Life babies huh)

Here have some more comic book ages speculation

ignoring reboot, everyone sliiiightly older than they were when the reboot happened (kind of taking into account real-time aging since then)

Bruce was 24-25 when he picked up a 12 year old Dick Grayson. Tim Drake was 4 years old at the time (so maybe it says 5 or 6 in aLPfD, it makes more sense to make him 4) .

So Dick is 12 years younger than Bruce, and Tim is 7 years younger than Dick.

Tim is 18 years old (almost 19; became emancipated minor at 17). Dick is 27. Bruce is, therefore, 38. That feels soooo younggg to me, for Bruce.

Dick was about 18-19 when he left Robin. Jason Todd was 13 at the time. Jason died two years later, when Tim Drake was 13 (see, I always forget how close Jason and Tim MUST be in age).

So Dick is 12 years younger than Bruce, and Jason is about three-four years younger than Dick, and Tim is about three years younger than Jason.

So if Tim is 18, then Jason is 21 or 22, Dick is 25, and Bruce is 38. Damian is about 11-12 years old. He was concieved when Bruce was 26, which is when Dick was still Robin (Dick was Robin until Bruce was about 30).

Cass is canonically about Jason’s age. I’ll say she’s around 21. Steph is Tim’s age, but she was in college all of her Batgirl run right? So I’ll put her a year or so older than him. About 19, almost 20ish. Babs is three years older than Dick. I don’t really care what any other story says, ahaha, to me she’s always always always going to be three years older than him. That makes her about 28. She was shot just before Jason died (when he was around 14-15, maybe). That would be about sevenish years ago.

Dick joined the original Teen Titans when he was like 13ish, just starting out, and then the New Teen Titans when he was 16ish. Maybe even 15? He and Kory dated from the time he was 17 until they were about…21? See, this is where everything falls apart, because there is literally not enough time for all of this to happen. Dick has to be older in order to incorporate his relationship with Kory AND his relationship with Babs. Because supposedly the whole almost-wedding thing with Kory happened soon after Babs got shot, which was about 7 years ago. If Dick is only about 25 (which he MUST be, if Tim saw his his parents’s accident in A Lonely Place of Dying and is now confirmed to be around 18), then seven years ago he was 18, just retiring the Robin costume, and still in a strong relationship with Kory. Heck, he could’ve only possible been in a relationship with her, at that time, for about a year or two at the most, and everybody knows that their relationship was long and really serious. So Dick and Babs and the Titans (and Bruce too) HAVE to be older than they can possibly be.

DO YOU KNOW WHOSE FAULT THIS IS. THIS IS TIM DRAKE’S FAULT. HIS INTRODUCTORY STORY AND HIS PERPETUAL STATE OF 16 YEARS OLD DURING THE ‘90S AND ‘00S IS THE CAUSE OF ALL OF THIS UGH

ok but if I wasn’t paying attention to that lil tidbit of canon this is how I would age the kids:

Bruce Wayne: 40-41
Dick Grayson: 28-29
Jason Todd: 23
Tim Drake: 18-19
Stephanie Brown: 20
Cassandra Cain: 22-23
Barbara Gordon: 31

BUT ANYWAY. Kate Kane was 12 twenty years ago. That makes her 32-33, the generation in between Dick’s and Bruce’s. Renee Montoya is also around that age, and Helena Bertinelli as well.

Dinah is slightly older, maybe 34-35ish (Ollie’s a little older than Bruce, gettin’ up there to 40+). Roy is Dick’s age, if not a year or so older. Connor is…23ish? I want to say around Jason Todd’s age. Mia’s maybe Tim’s age.

HELENA I SEE WHAT YOU DID THERE

In honor of International Women’s Day, here are some of the most inspirational women from DC comics.

If Bruce had stayed as international!Batman and Dick local!Batman and Damian as Robin and Barbara as Oracle and Tim as Red Robin (with the unternet costume) and Jason as Red Hood (except with more hugs) and Kate as Batwoman and Helena Bertinelli as Huntress and Cass as Black Bat and Stephanie had become Knightwing and Nell had become Batgirl, then that would be the perfect thing, the perfect thing

I love Helena Bertinelli so so so much but I pretty much outright refuse to reblog any pictures of her with that ridiculous belly window.

My Personal Top 10 Favorite Moments in DC Comics

Happy New Year’s, everybody! There have been a lot of Top 10 Comic Book Somethings lists lately, and I thought I’d throw in my two cents. I’m pretty amateur when it comes to reading comics, so my favorites are generally centered around the same group of characters, and I’m not counting anything in the New 52 either (otherwise you would most definitely see something about the Court of Owls, if not a lil Damian Wayne at his grandparents’ graves).

In any case, here are ten moments (and an Honorable Mention each, because how could I choose just 10 and also I didn’t want to be super redundant) that I think were awesome, badass or in some way completely freaking cool.

Needless to say, major spoilers ahead. But they’re all for fairly well-known stories, and none are that recent, so you’re likely familiar with at least most of them.

In order of ascending badassery:

While blithely perusing the Dick Grayson Wikipedia page, I noticed something that really upsets me.
Under “Love Interests” (which is a whole section in and of itself, lol), three of the most important women in Dick’s life are mentioned. Sure, Donna was never really a love interest per se but he does love her very much and I don’t resent the fact that she’s there. Not at all.
However. That last name. Catalina Flores? Yeah, you guys remember her? Tarantula? The one who, in Nightwing #93 did this to him?

First of all, to make it very clear: this was rape. On the last page he staggered up to the roof. He said, “I can’t breathe,” and then he starts babbling about Bruce and his pain and Catalina doesn’t understand what he’s talking about, but she literally gets on top of him and despite him CLEARLY, directly saying, “No, don’t touch me,” she just ignores him and does what she wants. He can’t breathe, he can’t think, he can’t even see straight, and she just barrels right past that to satisfy herself. It’s sick. I remember reading this page for the first time. I couldn’t even believe it. It’s horrifying and disgusting, and it’s rape, no matter what anyone wants to argue.
Especially that stupid “I never said it was rape, just non-consensual” - uhhhh, what do you think rape is? Oxford Dictionary says it’s “forcing another person to have sexual intercourse against their will.” In other words, without consent.
So getting back to my original point, Catalina Flores is actually listed under Dick Grayson’s “Love Interests” on his Wikipedia page.
Are you fucking kidding me? Who wrote that? Where can I find them, so I can punch some sense into their face? Even before Catalina did this, Dick didn’t really like her. She was irritating, and she was another vigilante in Blüdhaven and she didn’t know how to do the damn job and basically was a big nuisance to him. At no point were they really involved, even though Catalina (for some reason) is totally convinced that they are.
By Wikipedia’s own definition, a romantic or love interest is “a stock character, an object of romantic admiration and attraction for the main character(s).” There is no real indication of “romantic admiration” or “attraction” towards Catalina from Dick. He doesn’t like her. After this, sure he goes along with her and he sort of lets her do what she wants, but he can’t even deal with the guilt of everything. He just sort of rolls over and takes it. After everything he’d seen and everything that Blockbuster and Deathstroke had done to him prior to this, honestly, I don’t blame him. He’d been through hell.
But Catalina doesn’t stop there. She doesn’t stop with taking a chance to jump him whenever she can, and she doesn’t stop when he’s quiet and tells her she doesn’t know anything about him, or that he doesn’t trust her. No. She just keeps going and going and going. How far?

Well, that almost happened.
I can’t even. Dick doesn’t even like her. He just can’t do anything else at this point. He’s so full of guilt and pain that he lets her just string him along. And it’s awful.
But the most important part is that THERE IS NO ROMANCE HERE. Let’s go back to the Oxford Dictionary. Romance is “a feeling of excitement and mystery associated with love.”
There is no excitement in Dick during the time he’s with Catalina. There is no mystery. There is just a blankness and dullness that is totally uncharacteristic for him. There is no love between them, nothing even resembling it.
Barbara, Kory and Donna, the other three women in the category, are absolutely without a doubt the most influential women in his life. That section could have ended there.
Even if it didn’t, there are other women that could have been included. Remember Cheyenne Freemont?

(that is, by the way, absolutely not what you think it is)
Or Liu?

Or hell, even Helena?

These three women are all lovely ladies who qualify as Dick Grayson’s “love interest”s. And yet the only other woman besides Dick’s best female friends who’s listed under that particular section on the page that people go to in order to learn about Dick is his rapist. That is absolutely disgusting. Like I said before - who wrote this page?!? What were they thinking? How could Catalina Flores possible qualify as a love interest, if Liu did not? Dick explicitly states that she was his first love.
Man, I would even call Amy Rohrbach a love interest before Catalina Flores. Sure, she’s married and not remotely interested in him - but he thought she asked him out on a date once, ahaha, and he brought her flowers. Regardless, they had a relationship where they both cared about each other, whereas Catalina was only interested in pleasing herself and Dick was too numb and full of guilt to care about her or himself.
So in conclusion, Wikipedia makes me rage, again. And the unbelievable reality that the fact that Dick Grayson was actually blatantly raped was absolutely never addressed in the comics is just awful, to me. I can understand that Dick may have been in denial. Or that he was too humiliated to tell anyone, least of all Bruce or Barbara (who had just broken up with him, in Nightwing #87). But it was never mentioned again. He didn’t even think about it. And that…agh. I just would have preferred to see him dealing with it, or getting help or something.
He does actually talk to that therapist at one point. I can’t remember her name, but I’m pretty sure he goes and talks to her (in costume) for a few issues at some point after this. Not about Catalina, though, not as I recall.
Anyway, I’m done here. You can ignore my massive post of Dick Grayson/Nightwing/Wikipedia-related feelings. I just had to get this out there.
However, I will add that if you haven’t read Nightwing from about #71-100, DO SO. It hurts. Oh man, does it hurt. I remember I couldn’t believe all the complete shit they were putting him through. But personally I think it’s a damn good story. I miss Amy and Gannon so much. Sigh. Maybe if we’re lucky they’ll eventually show up in the new Nightwing? Maybe?
Nightwing #100 is worth it on its own because he FINALLY stands up to Catalina. Finally.
