This has been rolling around in my head for days here so I’m going to talk about it.

A short Damian Wayne fanfiction. Title inspired by the final line of Alexander Pope’s Essay on Man, Epistle I, x.
This is more like a character study than a fanfic. But I wanted to take another look at Colin, who, far from being the cute, adorable innocent kid we’re all so partial to portray him as, he’s badass and he’s got issues and I wanted to express him, however shortly in this story, as much harsher than we’re used to.
This should be set a few years in the future. I imagine Damian’s around 16, so Bruce has been his Batman for a while now, and he’s adjusted to life without Dick. And Colin has been placed in a private school outside of Gotham (with the help of a scholarship granted by the Waynes aw yeah), closer to Wayne Manor. He boards there. Also, all references to locations are based off this map.
I wanted to explore, as accurately as I could, what it would be like for Dick and Damian to have an honest discussion about sexuality and relationships and whatnot. Somewhere far out of Bruce’s earshot, somewhere Damian can be reminded how much Dick means to him, and how much he cares about him. Damian wants to talk, I really think he does, but he doesn’t really know how do, and he doesn’t know when, and it’s really frustrating for him.
It’s not as shippy as it could be, considering that I’ve been known to sometimes be a fan of Dick/Damian, but I wanted to make it all about Damian, and less about his relationship with Dick, actually.

remember that time in Speaker of the Dead Grego was being fussy and mean and so Ender picked him up and crossed his own legs over Grego’s and basically held him there until he apologized and was basically really genial and kind about it, but also really firm? and then Grego peed on him lol
conceptually, that moment reminds me of Dick and Damian so much. Like because Grego/Damian is being so childish and mean and rude, and Ender/Dick sees that and understands all the issues and problems that Grego/Damian has grown up with, but also knows that this child has to learn and understand how not to treat people like that, for fear of growing up seriously emotionally stunted. But Ender/Dick doesn’t get really harsh like Marcao/Bruce would. Instead he pleasantly takes the kid and pins him down across his lap until he stops struggling. He’s disciplining him and keeping him there until he apologizes, but at the same time he’s holding him on his lap. Who ever held Grego/Damian on their lap? Marcao/Bruce certainly never did, and I doubt Novinha/Talia ever did as well. Grego at least had his siblings, but they were all tired and worn out and Ela couldn’t give all the kids the attention they deserved, that would be impossible.
Anyway, I wouldn’t really carry the comparison to Grego and Ender much further, but that moment just really reminds me of a Dick and Damian type moment.
Oh, and also, I mean, just because I loved Damian and Dick and miss them very much doesn’t mean that I think Dick should’ve been Batman forever. Noooo. I think that Nightwing IS Dick and being Batman was sort of suffocating for him, in little ways that he didn’t necessarily notice until after it was too late.
So I LOVED Dick and Damian as Batman and Robin, but I by no means want them to continue to be B&R. I would’ve liked to see more of the transition process, though. Surely Damian and Dick had feelings about leaving each other that had to be addressed.

UGH NO YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND MY FEELINGS ABOUT THIS MOMENT
Because the next shot we see of them is this:
THEY’RE GRINNING AT EACH OTHER. DO YOU SEE THAT? Like two kids planning a big joke! They just snapped at each other! Damian just threatened him! - except, it wasn’t a threat. It wasn’t, and if you only see the first few panels without context you might misinterpret it that way but OH MY GOSH DICK AND DAMIAN AS BATMAN AND ROBIN WERE THE BEST. Dick was exactly what Damian needed. Dick had a sense of humor and he knew how to take things half-sincerely and he was impressed when Damian needed him to be impressed and rarely did he treat Damian like a child. He KNEW Damian and understood the kid and other people may have been a lil freaked out by Damian, or uncomfortable with him, or overly protective or dismissive but Dick was just the right amount of everything to recognize, hey, this kid is just a kid but he’s a person too and actually kind of cool.
They LOVED each other. So much. And I still miss their Dynamic Duo.

Actually I was freaking out over this a little while ago because the idea just occurred to me. A DCU/Battle School AU. That is one AU I would write and read the hell out of.
I’ve been thinking about this and basically I think that Tim would serve as the main character here, like the Ender figure. Bruce Wayne would run Battle School (being the equivalent of Colonel Graff) and Dick Grayson would be his Lieutenant Anderson. Except Lieutenant Grayson would take a particular liking to a young Tim Drake. In Tim’s Launchy group, he would meet Conner. And Jason would be this older kid, Commander of an army, used to be Colonel Wayne’s favorite until some sort of accident and now Bruce thinks that Tim is the “one,” not Jason.
Also Talia al Ghul would have this child, Damian, and push and push Anderson and Graff to let him in, but they’d be all “noooooo” at first and ugh ugh ugh yes, and Tim and he don’t like each other but Damian is the most brilliant (like Bean) and YES
- Jason Todd is commander of Salamander Army; Stephanie is in Salamander Army?
- Rose Wilson is commander of Asp Army
- Cassie Sandsmark is commander of Rabbit Army, Bart would be in her army?
- Kara is commander of Phoenix Army
- Connor Hawke is commander of Condor Army
- um Jaime Reyes gets promoted to commander of Scarab Army (SHH I’M MAKING THAT ONE UP) but he doesn’t feel like he’s really commander-material (and I guess he isn’t really) and he and Eddie and Megan and Virgil and are in it and they’re just kind of a nice army that provides Tim with support sometimes. Sort of like a Dink kind of character?
- Tim becomes commander of BAT ARMY AW YEAH THAT’S HAPPENING I’M DOING THAT, Conner’s in his army
- And eventually his jeesh becomes: Conner, Cassie, Bart, Rose, Damian, Stephanie, (Kara, Jaime, Eddie, Megan)? maybe Connor could be their Carn, like he went off to Command School and they had to go and get him to be included, or maybe Connor could be like “no don’t choose me…Mia’s better” and MIA, maybe Jason too, although Jay would be so angry at being included, maybe he’d turn it down.
- At some point Bruce would be alienating and kind of torturing Tim, and Dick would intervene and be all, ARE YOU MADE OF STONE REALLY STOP
- also Damian would be such an outcast because of his genius and how young he is and and and
- like I kind of want to make Jason and Steph the Peter and Valentine figures but idk yo
- gosh the batfamily is SO similar to the Enderfam sjkdghskjfhsdjkhfkjshfkjsdhf
- many of the Justice League and older Titans are teachers at Battle School; and and and Wally is a teacher as well but he had a family before he got deployed to work at Battle School and his two kids were babies when he left but then one of them gets drafted into BS (def Iris, not Jai) and then like Damian can bond with Iris and Lian and maybe Lian could even be in Tim’s jeesh? But Iris could play the role of Nikolai, as Damian asks her to join and she’s all, “I’m not as good as y’all. I can’t do it, Dami” and Damian is hurt but dughsdkjhfsdkjhfsdfjhsdkf
- maybe Milagro could get in too and Jaime has this whole internal dilemma over having a sibling at Battle School. Do they allow siblings at BS? I’m sure they do

- Or maybe he could lose Steph or Conner somehow, so they’re not in his Jeesh and that tears him apart and then and then and then

Bruce’s funeral, and a night after his return.
Dick’s words until “Always” come from Superman/Batman #76, and the poem is by Mary Elizabeth Frye.
So who do you think was at Bruce’s funeral? In Superman/Batman #76 Clark says it’s “just the core of the League,” and on-panel we see him, Dick, Tim, Ollie, Dinah and Diana too (but I thought she was Zatanna at first). I would imagine that J’onn and Arthur were there, because I’ve always totally dug a behind-the-scenes friendship between Bruce and both of them.
Zatanna, of course. I’m not sure that Hal would be there, or any other Green Lantern. Bruce never really had a ton of love for them.
I would want to say that Roy was there, because Roy worked with Batman more than any of Dick’s other friends did (right? maybe that’s just a headcanon of mine). I know Wally worked with Bruce in the JLA for a while but I don’t think he’d be there.
And I also like to think Jason showed up - didn’t join them, but hung back and watched. Clark could hear him. He never told Dick, but he did tell Bruce about it once he returned.

They whisper something in each other’s ears, and you don’t look at their faces.
This is an odd thing to want to write, but I’ve been thinking about Devin Grayson’s words about Dick’s sexuality and the whole “contact junkie” thing and I want to write this story about Dick encountering this woman from his past that he hasn’t seen for years. When he and Kory were together, there was a period where they were really exploring sex and being giggly kids having a good time, and for a while there was this young woman (named Myra, but I might change that), and Kory invited her initially because Kory just thought she was so beautiful and fascinating and Dick was a little nervous about it at first but Myra was so enthusiastic and loving and so much like the two of them that they were sort of in this three-way relationship for a while. She was kind of younger than either of them, but she was so sweet and loving and they loved her and loving her made them love each other even more as well.

Also, I think it’s interesting that out of the original five Teen Titans, the only one who’s never had a child is Dick. Dick seems like the kind of guy who would love kids. When they were young I bet, if they thought about it at all, they thought that Dick would’ve been the first of the guys to have kids.
He has his baby brothers, his friends’ children, and the occasional kid he gets attached to. But no biological children, unlike every single other one of the five.
