She ignores him. He crosses his arms, leaning back against the cold, dirty wall. ‘So what are you, anyway,’ he says after a while. ‘Chinese?’ No answer. He can almost feel her anger, rolling off her shoulders and hitting him in sharp, icy waves. He shivers. ‘Japanese?’
She turns violently and looks right at him, eyes burning, freezing him in place. ‘No,’ she hisses, and he swears, just for a moment, he hears her voice tremble. ‘I’m Vietnamese.’
He forgets how to breathe.)

Nothing like that. EVERYONE should be careful at night, men and women alike, not only because of rape but because of other crimes too. It’s the feminist mindset that frames issues in a male-female dichotomy you can’t escape.

society tells women, specifically to avoid being raped, to be careful at night, dress “appropriately,” and then shames women for being wary of men. that’s society, it’s systematic and it happens. it’s everywhere. there are posts and posts and continual email chains on warnings of new techniques rapists have developed, new tricks and ways to avoid them, helpful tips to not. get. raped. and then everybody thinks this general distrust of men is LIKE SO OUT OF LINE AND RIDICULOUS AND OBVS SHE MUST BE A MAN-HATING LESBIAN. it’s everywhere and it’s a plain denial of facts to say that it doesn’t happen.
the male-female dichotomy comes from society, which frames things in “masculine” and “feminine” terms and doesn’t leave any wiggle room. feminism is not about women vs. men, it’s about the lower status that society assigns to femininity and pure fact that society values conventionally male traits far more than conventionally female traits. when we point out what society has done, we’re pointing out the disparity between women and men, and so to people who have never been on one side of this disparity, it may seem like pointing out something that isn’t there - but come on, it’s there ALL OVER our society, pure discrimination against women, devaluing of feminine traits, etc. it’s built into our society.
